Toby’s Corner

2340 Prytania Street. Directly across the street from McGehee is the oldest building in the Garden District.

Take a peek through the bushes.

It dates back to at least 1838.

It was built for Philadelphia wheelwright Thomas Toby.

A wheelwright makes wagon wheels. Seriously.

That’s a giant sugar cauldron turned into a fountain out front.

The house is on brick piers to combat flooding and encourage air circulation.

The current residents, The Westfeldts, are descendants of only the second family to own the house. The owner has been Rex and his daughter has been the queen of Mardi Gras.
