Coffee and Rice

2523 Prytania Street. The river provided the wealth for the homeowners in this area. Coffee and rice are just two commodities that travel up and down the river.

Coffee

This house was originally built for a coffee importer. When the Civil War started naval blockades prevented many shipments of coffee from making it to New Orleans. New Orleanians began mixing in chicory to stretch their thin coffee supply. If your coffee was bitter this morning, blame the Yankees. We got used to the bitter chicory herb.

Rice

Yes, a lot of rice goes up and down the river, but now we’re talking about Anne Rice again.

She bought this house in the 90s because she spent so much time in the neighborhood as a child.

Side note, her real name is Howard Allen Frances O'Brien.

Cage

This house has also been owned by Nicholas Cage.
